Usually, orthodontic treatment begins between the ages of nine and eleven. In some special cases, however, a so-called early treatment should be carried out (from the age of six) if growth or developmental impairments can be the consequence. This treatment is usually conducted with removable braces and lasts 1.5 years. If you or your dentist are not sure whether early treatment is necessary, then make a consultation appointment with us. How long does a treatment take? The duration of treatment depends on the treatment task. Very slight malpositions can often be corrected in just a few months, while comprehensive active treatment usually takes two to three years, in rare individual cases even longer. This is followed by the stabilisation phase, which lasts at least two years. In this phase, check-ups take place every three months and braces are worn less and less often. Can I choose whether the treatment is carried out with fixed or removable braces? No, because both kinds of braces have different applications. Removable braces can influence jaw growth very well. Using fixed braces to correct jaw growth is not possible at all. On the other hand, fixed braces are very effective in correcting crooked teeth. This in turn is not possible with removable braces (except with aligners). Is treatment still possible in adults? Treatment is possible at any age. With the latest techniques, it is now possible not only to carry out the treatment quickly and efficiently, long-term stability can be achieved as well. Do fixed braces damage the teeth? Clean teeth do not decay! That is why thorough dental care is urgently required. Plaque caused by unremoved food residues forms acids and damages the enamel and gums. It is therefore the patients’ responsibility whether damage to the teeth will occur. The orthodontist checks whether you or your child are capable of cleaning your teeth as required before treatment begins. Therefore, we do not insert fixed braces if oral hygiene is insufficient. After the braces have been attached, you and your child will receive information about the appropriate hygiene measures. In addition, dental care is checked throughout the treatment. It is also possible to arrange additional dental hygiene sessions with us. Is treatment with fixed braces painful? The teeth may be hypersensitive for a couple of days. Sometimes the oral mucosa may be sore. However, after a short period of adaptation, the initial problems disappear. How long does the result last? For long-term stability we recommend fixed retainers. This thin wire ensures a beautiful and, above all, long-lasting result for the rest of your life. As long as it remains in your mouth. Does the statutory health insurance cover the treatment costs? The classification of the malposition according to the orthodontic indication groups( KIG) is decisive for cost coverage by the statutory health insurance. The need for treatment is graded in 5 groups. From level 3 onwards, the insurance will cover basic treatment. In addition, the patient should be under 18 years of age at the start of treatment. From the age of 18, only surgical- orthodontic treatment will be covered by the statutory health insurance. What happens if the statutory health insurance does not cover the treatment? In case of KIG 1 and 2, the treatment is not covered by the statutory health insurance. However, this does not mean that there is no need for treatment. In any case, you should seek individual advice about advantages and disadvantages. The treatment costs can be paid by private arrangement.
